The Hippy Coyote Performs Dozens of Lion Dances and Kung Fu Dragon

From Christmas through the end of Februrary are over 80 Lion Dances to be performed by the Las Vegas Lohan Kung Fu School. Although Richard Del Connor, Buddha Zhen, The Hippy Coyote was supposed to be a Lion Dance drummer, he ended up performing many Dragon dances from different sections of the dozen-membered snake-like dragon.

"My favorite performance," excitedly explains Coyote, "was the Venetian. I was the 2nd in line, the guy behind the dragon head. We'd done some shows together so I understood his animation style and movements. We made that dragon look like it was alive! It was great!"

Several Kung Fu Masters from around the world visited the Lohan Kung Fu school during the Chinese New Year. Our Kung Fu Cowboy asked them lots of questions and is especially thankful to Shifu Marvin Quon, who provided Coyote with lots of information so that the Shaolin Chi Mantis Traditional Buddhist Gongfu and Taijiquan school could offer a "real traditional" dragon dance.

This new information combined with the training of the Vegas Lohan Kung Fu school enabled Buddha Zhen to create a brand new Lion Dance curriculum for Shaolin Chi Mantis, Buddha Kung Fu, and Tai Chi Youth.

Buddha Zhen Meets Indian Buddha

The Las Vegas Lohan School has a weekly Buddhist Sangha led by an Indian Buddhist Priest. He looks a little like the Maharashi Mahesh Yogi with his long grey white hair, but without a beard he has a kind of Japanese Buddha statue appearance.

At the end of the Sangha, the Priest answered some questions. Coyote was impressed with some of his answers.

Buddha Zhen also attended a ceremony for the passing of Rev. Steve Baugh's former Zen Master before Christmas. This was an interesting experience of Asian funeral concepts.

Just before he passed last year, Rev. Steve's Zen Master said, "Another Zen Master will come to you."

Coyote Joins Nevada Freemason Daylite Lodge 44 in Las Vegas

This involved an interesting transfer process.

You can be a Mason in as many states as you want. Within each state, one Freemason Lodge will be your primary membership and you can be a "dual member" in other lodges. Only in your main lodge does a mason have voting privileges.

In order to cut costs though, Coyote could only afford one membership, in one lodge.

But what happens if you quit a lodge and then are not accepted into another lodge? Uh-oh.

Plus, the lodges contact each other and get verification of membership and masonic character. According to the Secretary of Daylite Lodge 44 speaking to Richard Del Connor, "You got a lot of very strong recommendations. You are a good man."

Coyote liked the sound of that, "You are a good man."

For this particular transfer of Masonic Lodges, Coyote chose the "Demit When Approved" option which meant that only after his application was accepted by the new lodge by unanimous vote would the demit begin. Demiting means resignation or permanently withdrawing membership.

Coyote's application was accepted unanimously in January by the Daylite Lodge 44 membership after being investigated and approved for membership. Usually an application is accepted at one meeting, then investigated, then voted on for membership acceptance at a following meeting. Since Coyote had come "highly recommended" the Las Vegas Masonic Lodge Secretary encouraged an acceptance vote.

The California Grand Secretary Alan Casalou also sent a special letter of recommendation directly to Daylite Lodge after Richard told him he had applied for membership there.

So Richard Del Connor, Buddha Zhen Shen-Lang, The Hippy Coyote is a member of Nevada Freemason Daylite Lodge #44 in Las Vegas.
