The Hippy Coyote Moves Up the Zen Buddhist Ladder

American Zen, America's first Buddhist rock band, has defined spiritual growth as 8 LEVELS to climb.

The first LEVEL, is where everyone starts, and most people end: LEVEL 1. LEVEL 1 is struggle of life. We are all in LEVEL 1 to some extent, but unless you add religion to it, you're just an evolved animal. American Zen's LEVEL 1 album is titled, PEACE OF MIND.

LEVEL 2 is where humans create religion and philosophy and ethics and morals and heaven and... Most people who seek religion get stuck here, happily or unhappily. Unfortunately, religion and spirituality can sometimes conflict. The "sharks" of religions manipulate people with fear and punishments from God. These are the Christ Killers.

LEVEL 3 is where the lessons and morals of religion have been learned and adopted--without obligation to any religion. All religions are respected equally. All people are loved equally. LEVEL 3 is the level of love. American Zen's Level 3 album is title, I Want You To Love Me.

LEVEL 4 is where the spiritual person pursues the aspects of life and survival with the goal of being the best--the protector. Kung Fu becomes the religion of the body as it develops and enhances the body which also invigorates the mind.

LEVEL 4 is where the spiritual person pursues intellectual questions to be the best--the teacher. Kung Fu is the physical part of Zen Buddhism, but the mind is challenged to control the body. By controlling the body, the mind becomes controllable. Kung Fu opens the intellect with vitality and endurance. Buddhism is more psychology than theology. Buddhism is about how the mind works and how to communicate more effectively.

LEVEL 4 is where the spiritual person pursues the many skills that will benefit their future the best--the prepared person. Preparation and planning become normal parts of life with Kung Fu. Each weapon and traditional martial arts dance develop the mind and body in new and unique ways. Kung Fu prepares the body and mind for a more successful life.

LEVEL 4 is a celebration of life and the body and mind and spirit we are given. Life is maximized and enjoyed fully with a healthy mind and body. Just as we enjoy life less when we are sick, we can enjoy it even more by being super-healthy.

With Shaolin Kung Fu we are healthy, smart, educated, fast, strong, patient, compassionate, and protective.

In LEVEL 4 we are Kung Fu Cowboys.
