Homeless Coyote Has One Month to Move
Still homeless, our Coyote has been shuffling between his homeless ex-wife and son in Los Angeles, and his father's studio apartment living room floor.
"It's been nice to have a bathroom and internet in San Diego. My life is becoming organized again. Almost," explains our lost dog. "People have been generous to my son and someone bought him a $129 sleeping bag and brought it to the coffee shop he hangs out at, waiting for his mom to get off work. The Montrose community we used to live in has recognized him as being homeless, and some neighbors have been providing food and clothing for them."
Coyote had hoped that by moving to San Diego his relatives would help him establish a home and career.
"I've got some wealthy relatives. One of them lost half-a-million dollars in the past few years in the stock market. Another relative has a dozen homes but none of which they'd allow me or my family to live in. Another relative has a couple touring rock bands, but he's boldly stated to me that he won't provide me any help with my music career because it might diminish his financial opportunities. Oh yeah, my dad just got home from shopping he was proud of getting a rain check for the sold out tuna cans at one dollar each. He explained to me how my millionaire uncle in Northern California has never been married, never had kids but loves to always buy things on sale and cook stews to save money."
Coyote wasn't invited to his cousin's wedding or a niece's birthday party.
His mother removed him from her Last Will and Testament and proclaimed in writing that she is no longer his mother. One cousin was an exception who came to the rescue and paid our storage bill a few days before the auction took place. "I can't watch that 'Storage Wars' show," says a sad doggey. "Each month is a battle to pay that bill then chip away at my credit cards."
Richard Del Connor / Buddha Zhen / The Hippy Coyote has everything he owns in one 10' x 30' storage unit, packed to the roof. The storage unit has everything Shaolin Records owns from clothing and furniture to instruments, Kung Fu weapons, recordings, computer equipment, file cabinets of Coyote's writings, and all the records and photography of Coyote that has accumulated to $500,000 since 1969.
"I really like San Diego," says Coyote. "It's a beautiful city. I really like the streets. They curve, dip, and go up and down more than anywhere I've ever been. It's really fun to drive here. It's like living on the lunar surface with lots of trees and sagebrush. I've been wanting a motorcycle ever since I got here."
Coyote used to own a custom Triumph motorcycle, and a Baja Bug dune buggie when he lived in San Diego during the 1970s. "Seriously, I want a Triumph 650 chopper."
But Coyote can't play, hunt, fish, or tackle women in his current financial state. "Maybe some rich woman will adopt me," he chuckles.
"My dad has given me a deadline of "I want you out by Thanksgiving!" If I sign up enough students at the end of this month, I might be okay. If I don't--I may go back to Los Angeles. The main reason I decided to move down here was to see if my family would help me. I've been here more than three months and they've made it clear that they have no intention of helping me settle here. My brother gave me some work because he was short-handed and needed someone to replace some immigrant workers who have been unreliable, but he's selling the business and there's no more work there."
Rhino Staging has been Coyote's main source of income this year. The San Diego operation has been very supportive of Coyote. "I think I've proven my worth and abilities as a good worker and a good team player. I really like my co-workers and get along with them fabulously. Just yesterday I found out that my big boss, Bob Pantages, used to be in the recording studio and mastering business just like me. He knew about the Future Disk mastering lab I designed and built in the 1980s. I was the architect and drew the blueprints that were used for their two mastering labs. I hired a couple of my musician friends as carpenters and built the studio rooms, remodeled the building and probably should have got more credit for my unique figure-8 studio design. I deserve to be in Mix magazine and have some platinum records for that one project. I used to build and remodel lots of studios back then."
"I left San Diego in 1978 because I couldn't figure out how to develop my artistic careers here. Now, I'm starting to feel the same caged feeling. My dad has been barking at me as I released the album, THE RICH - LIVE IN VENICE. He says, "How much money did you make today?" I answered that when I create an artistic project, or write a book that I don't get paid anything. I have to wait until people purchase it." "That's not good enough!" he's barked back at me several times. "You've got to get a job. You need money right now. You're wasting your time."
"That was another reason I left San Diego. My family is very Republican and do not support the arts or sciences. They believe in the stock market, real estate, and gambling. It turns out that not only my mother disowned me for raising my kids as a Mr. Mom. I found out from my cousins that my dad and other relatives think I'm a bum because I stopped being a Union Carpenter and refused to go to college for a degree to be a lawyer. Not one single relative has ever purchased one of my books or albums."
"What really cracked me up," laughs Coyote, "was when I asked my dad, what instruments do you tell people that I play? He answered, "I tell them harmonica and piano." I haven't played piano since 1967 and I only played harmonica when I was hitchhiking during the early '70s. Thanks to facebook a bunch of my old teenaged friends were aware of my musical career. Several people asked me to perform with the band at my high school graduation."
"I've been studying the lives of famous people for the past decade trying to understand how their careers went farther than mine. The one factor I've seen more than any other factor of success was family support. Whether it's inheritance, investment, or encouragement, most of the successful people I envy have had support from their family. Now what tears me up inside even more than being abandoned and disrespected by my relatives is the fact that I really want to provide for my kids. I've always kept a list in the back of my mind of all my ex-girlfriends I'd like to buy a car or present for also. But my kids really need me, and I haven't got a dime to spare. It sucks. I'd really like to buy my ex-wife a car. Her and my son are homeless and sleeping between buildings when I'm not in Los Angeles. I purchased a camper for my 4-cylinder truck, but it was too big and heavy. Now that I have a little fiberglass shell on my truck, I've rigged it up with a bed, some drawers for my food, and a couple suitcases and my monk spade and spear and some swords. It's jammed with stuff, but I can sleep in it."
With the Thanksgiving deadline approaching fast, Coyote pleaded for a couple more months, but his dad explained, "I've lived alone for thirty years. I need my privacy back." Coyote understands and hopes he can afford his own home as the weather becomes colder and winter approaches.

Coyote on Craig's List
Coyote is putting ads on Craigs List for musicians or music opportunities. "Maybe I can get hired by a band as a singer," says Coyote to his Rhino buddies. But that was why Coyote left San Diego. He refused to play cover songs. "I jammed with one of my teenage music friends. He is a very good guitarist now. He said that he has been a "blue collar guitar player" for many years. Then he asked his wife, "Was I happy?" She shook her had sadly from side to side. "I hated it!" he proclaimed to Coyote. "I used to come home miserable. I hated it."
Coyote may have made a fraction of the money his old schoolmate has made from performing, but Coyote loves music and has fond memories of every band he created and every concert he performed. Each band of Coyote was a new expression and an evolution of style and musical ability. From the punk rock of the early Rich bands, to the last Coyote Graveyard bands he performed in, each was a valuable expression of creativity and artistic ingenuity. Coyote has matured with and through his music and writings.

NEW MUSIC RELEASE: "Dizzy, My Toxic Daughter - Halloween Single"
Since Shaolin Records has been without a computer since 2010 and been unable to release the next American Zen album, LEVEL 4 = Kung Fu Cowboy Part 2: 3rd Degree Master Mason, we (me, The Coyote, and I) are releasing old tapes we discovered on our hard drive while in Las Vegas.
These albums are unmastered and raw, but it's all we can provide right now. A new song from the Kung Fu Cowboy Part 2 album will be released as a "Halloween Single" titled, "Dizzy, My Toxic Daughter." This is a rough mix while recording the album in 2010, just before our computer died. Unmastered, it still sounds really cool, and we hope you will enjoy it. It will be released, October 30, 2012, this Halloween. "It's a present to my daughter," explains Coyote. "She's having a big Halloween party this year and I thought she might enjoy it. I especially thought it would be appropriate because of the cover art I made for the Halloween music single cover. I took a picture of my daughter from 1977 and drew a string attached to a small shrunken head of me. It makes me laugh every time I see it."
Richard Del Connor, (The Hippy Coyote): 1957 avocado green Rickenbacker 4000 bass played through Marshall amp, 1984 Fender Stratocaster played through the same Marshall amp, Chinese cheapo Pro Drums drumset of Coyote with Tama Cobra high hat, and poetry times three. Coyote recorded the same poem, "My Toxic Daughter," three times planning to choose the winning performance. Because all three versions were liked--all three versions are on the record. The song, "Dizzy," was written about the time of Caitlin's birth, and was based upon a teenaged girl Coyote knew in San Diego classrooms of the 1960s. The combination of the poem and song became, "Dizzy, My Toxic Daughter."
"My daughter Caitlin is anything but dizzy," explains a proud doggy daddy. "She was a Kung Fu champion and my best friend for many years. She is fabulous at helping people and really cares about her friends. She is an incredible person who I am very proud of. She's not shy or paranoid either. I am confident of her abilities to succeed and protect herself. Once, this Karate punk snuck up behind her at school and punched her in the kidneys as hard as he could and tried to knock her down. When she was done with him the police thought she had mugged him because he was so beat up and she got suspended. I was very proud of her."
