Coyote Drums for Vegas Kung Fu Lion Dances
The Hippy Coyote arrived in Las Vegas before Christmas 2011 to live with his Kung Fu brother, Rev. Steve Baugh. Rev. Steve knew that Coyote was having hard times financially and was end the end of a divorce--so he offered Coyote free room and board for the next year.
With 82 Lion Dances scheduled in less than two months, our Coyote quickly learned Lion Dance drumming, Chinese gong, and Chinese hand cymbals.
"It took a while, and I even added a new beat to their Lion Dance Routines called, "The Happy Beat." I'd heard something similar to it before and when they were using me as a relief drummer, so that their good drummers could take a break, I added this "Happy Beat" to extend my drumming repertoire. Everybody liked it, and several drummers started using it immediately in their routines. You can recognize it because it's mostly on the drum rim with a few drum head hits at the end of each drum riff."
Coyote enjoyed learning the Chinese gong which he also expanded with a few new beats or styles of hitting the gong. Audiences applauded the entire team but sometimes gave special nods to Coyote for driving the Lion Dance Team forward or picking up their pace. Rev. Steve also commented, "You add a lot of energy to the team," to Coyote.
"The Chinese cymbals are really cool. I performed them on this television show, we were performing for the Las Vegas mayor--and--I wasn't ready to perform those yet. It wasn't my best performance by far. But when the Chinese cymbals are played correctly, they are a real driving force. One of the teenage girl musicians of the Kung Fu school created an intro rhythm we sometimes used, but like my "Happy Beat," it requires some extra gusto and push."
Coyote's performances have been in many of the Las Vegas casinos where Coyote claims to be amazed at what he sees. "I see people from all over the world just sitting there for hours in front of their slot machines. They appear to be camped there and have someone bring them refreshments and food so they don't have to stand up. It's amazing! I never understood what gambling was before."
Coyote has spent some time watching the poker games which he says include an entirely different type of gambling personality.
So far, Coyote has not bet a single buck.
